This week, rather than dispersing my efforts among a few boxes when I got stuck, I continued doing only one until I got root. As a result, I was able to get root on 3 different boxes (in order): kraken, gh0st, and core. These all felt like CTF’s and less realistic, but I was able to still learn a lot, mainly on privilege escalation. On one of the boxes, the initial part of it was extremely similar to something I had done before, but I overlooked something super simple after that. I have begun to start working on the Windows boxes before because I have very little experience with those. Nmap NSE scripts have been very helpful with that process so far and I have found interesting things on one box. From here out, my goal is at least 1 root/user per day. I am also going to look more into Buffer Overflows this week and try to find a lab machine to attempt it on.
